Value: Making Disciples

"A mature disciple is one who effortlessly does what Jesus would do...." -Dallas Willard

What comes to mind when you think about discipleship? Is it a program? A course? A way of studying?

Discipleship, at its core, is about image bearing. We have been created to reflect God's image, and discipleship is part of restoring that image. While it does include learning, it involves the way we approach our daily lives. Scripture demonstrates how discipling is not a suggestion (or reserved for the "professional" Christians.) It is reality for everyone based on the nature of our design. We each influence others and are influenced by them.

For Christ-followers, being a disciple of Jesus requires us to know and reflect the heart of God. Jesus' incarnation and the start of His earthly ministry demonstrate this heart. Reflecting God's character, God's heart abounds in love and compassion, is quick to forgive and slow to get angry, and is just. (See Exodus 34:6) The Holy Spirit empowers us to be the same. Ultimately, discipleship isn't about information but transformation. It is the process of growing in Christlikeness so we act, react, and interact with those around us like Jesus.
