The Wise Are Wealthy
James doesn't simply issue a scathing rebuke of the rich as it appears (see James 5:1-6). Instead, he invites his readers to ponder a greater reality: the pursuit of personal satisfaction is often at the expense of healthy discontent.
Healthy discontent is the realization that we were created for another world and earthly pleasures were never intended to fully satisfy the God-ordained longings of our hearts. To pursue wealth or similar satisfaction is to lose the ability to have a healthy discontent that drives us deeper in our relationship with God.
Thankfully, God gives us wisdom to look at life differently, the kind of wisdom that can radically alter the way we think about and interpret life.
With God’s wisdom, we understand that:
- True satisfaction lies beyond the things that capture our hearts.
- The desire for satisfaction distorts our perspective and disrupts God’s provision.
- We must be discontent with anything that captivates us more than Jesus.
- Healthy discontent leads to greater trust and dependence on God.
God invites you to a place of entire satisfaction in himself. At the same time, this is an invitation to a healthy discontent with lesser things, that your heart might belong fully to the Lord.
Where is your heart today? Can you honestly say that your heart is captured by Jesus, that you are living with a healthy discontent for all else? I invite you to lay your life down and open your heart wide to Jesus.
