Jesus Walks on Water

Lack of faith. The disciples' lack of faith is quite jarring. They’ve

witnessed healings, exorcisms, and the multiplication of loaves

and fish. They’ve seen Jesus command the elements by taming

the winds and sea. However, with a clear allusion to the OT, the

reader can see how God opens and hardens hearts. God used the

apostles' imperfect faith to spread the early church, and he

continues to use our imperfect faith to do the same.

Jesus’ Care. This story is often misunderstood as Jesus delivering

his disciples from the storms of life. Although he protects his

disciples and certainly protects us amid life's spiritual and

emotional storms, Jesus calms the wind and sea so they can

continue their journey. Too often we look to Jesus to get us to the

other side when his plan is to journey along with us.
