The Ten Commandments?
As Christ-followers who are embraced by the new covenant, the lens of rigid law fades, replaced with a rich, covenantal perspective. This view highlights God's relational commitment to His people as demonstrated throughout the Old Testament. The structure of Exodus 20 – mirrored in Deuteronomy and Leviticus – reflects the Suzerain/Vassal treaties prominent in the ancient Near East. These treaties weren't mere regulations but formed the backbone of mutual relationships, revealing the identity of the suzerain and the responsibilities of the vassal. The 'Ten Words' are first about who God is and His reputation in the world He created. In the biblical context, they first point to God's identity and His unwavering commitment to His chosen people.
